Back in January 2011, TRAI announced the facility to shift from one operator to another within same operational area(later it allowed shifting of mobile number from one area to another) without changing the number. Lately, it is getting consumer attention and this year it crossed 10 crore mark(according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India)
Recently I switched my operator and it took only three days to get my new number operational. Both old and new one worked smoothly without giving me any chance to complain.
Procedure for Switching of Operator
- Obtain Porting Authorisation Code(PAC) or Unique Porting ID from your old operator by texting PORT YOUR-MOBILE-NO to 1900
- Now visit your nearest store of the new service provider with necessary documents(identity proof photocopy & 1 passport size photograph) and unique porting id. They will do rest of the task(filling out porting form, you just have to put your signature on one or two place).
- Then they will provide you a new SIM card with a minimal charge not more than Rs. 19 as set by the TRAI(in my case they didn't charge me).
- Based on your place and new operator it will take maximum of 7 days to get your new SIM activated.
- After activation of your new SIM call tele verification no(Vodafone- 117, Aircel- 59059, Reliance-123, Airtel- 59059).
- Finally recharge your number with First recharge voucher & Second recharge voucher to make your first call with new operator.
